Heralding 5G
5G, also called IMT-2020, is the next generation of cellular communications technology with evolutionary and revolutionary services that can have a deep impact on India. Three usage scenarios, including enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC), and massive machine type communications (mMTC) have multiple economic applications to advance the reach and utility of ‘Digital India’ and allied missions.
5G technologies have entered into public networks beginning in 2019 and are expected to advance to a full range of services by 2024. By acting early to embrace the 5G opportunity in economic verticals, India is poised to accelerate the 5G dividend and is potentially becoming an innovator in 5G applications.
5G technology has the potential for ushering a major societal transformation in India by enabling a rapid expansion of the role of information technology across manufacturing, educational, healthcare, agricultural, financial and social sectors. Emphasis is placed on 5G touching the lives of rural and economic segments so as to make it a truly inclusive technology.
Several indigenous technology companies are active in 5G domain in products, solutions and usecases. Global 5Gi standard from India is one of the key contributions from Indian ecosystem reflecting growing Radio technology competencies in the country and paving roadmap for 6G development activities.
